A couple of weeks back, Missoni inspired prints were all over twitter and pinterest thanks to a new consignment at the US department stores,Target. It seemed like everyone wanted a piece of the chevron action. Now you can too, because this week I’m sharing one of my favourite crochet stitches with you which whips up into a rather lovely scarf.
I’ve had this hank of Lorna’s laces Shepherd Sock in my stash yarn collection for longer than I care to remember. It was an impulse buy, I fell in love with the colour (shades of blue and turquoise which never wear). Thankfully, my neighbour does wear – and look good in these colours – so it will make an ideal Christmas gift. After the set up row, every row is the same so you’ll soon learn this stitch, and if you’ve mastered double crochet and simple increasing and decreasing this will be a doddle!
Chevron Stripe Scarf:
1 hank variegated sock yarn (or two for a longer scarf)
3.25mm hook (or use a slightly larger hook if you’re a “tight” crocheter)
Stitch pattern:
Make a chain which is a multiple of 14 plus 2 (I made a chain 44 long, to make a 13cm wide “skinny scarf”). Swatch a few rows to find your ideal size.
Row 1: (Set up row) 2DC into 2nd chain from hook, * 1DC into each of next 5 chains, skip 3 chains, 1DC into each of next 5 chains, 3DC into next chain; repeat from * to end (note that last stitch will be 2DC into chain not 3). Turn
Row 2: 1ch (does NOT count as 1st stitch). 2DC in first DC, * 1DC into next 5 chains, skip next 2 chains, 1 DC into each of next chains, 3 DC into next chain; repeat from * to end (note that final stitch will be 2 DC NOT 3). Turn
Repeat row 2 until scarf is desired length or until you run out of yarn.
Block to shape as the fabric does tend to pucker. (I usually block as I will wash, so in this case that means soaking in cold water with Ecover Delicate and soaking for 10 mins before carefully squeezing out excess water and laying the fabric on towels. Pin to shape and leave until completely dry).
